How do mesoscale swimmers interact with one another when there is finite inertia? Do they repel, attract, how do they arrange?

We numerically study simple model swimmers at intermediate Reynolds numbers and find that they form specific stable pairs depending on system parameters (e.g. Reynolds number). By looking at the flow fields, we relate the assemblies with nonlinear hydrodynamic interactions, namely steady streaming flows and discuss implications for the collective behavior beyond pairs.
