I am an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill. See also here. My CV can be found here.
My interests are in soft matter, specifically active matter, fluid dynamics, swimmers, robots, self-assembly, packing shapes, and granular dynamics. Although my background is in physics, I value enormously the experience I have gleaned from working in Engineering and Chemistry departments, in addition to Physics.

Hello everyone, I'm Yao! I'm a materials engineering student drawn to the space where computational physics is applied to real life problems, particularly materials-focused ones. I like problems that are equal parts physics and engineering: understanding a system well enough to model it, then building the tooling to actually run that model at scale.
I also don't like being stuck behind a screen, so I keep a hand in hardware engineering and fabrication. Working at both ends has made me a better engineer at each.
I'm always happy to talk with people working on computational materials, HPC, or anything at that intersection.
